陸域表層、海洋、大気に続いて、地下圏が第4の生命圏として、また、ジオサイエンスとバイオサイエンスを統合する舞台として世界で注目を集め始めている。これを受けて我が国の地下圏研究を促進させるために国際地下圏微生物シンポジウム(International Symposium for Subsurface Microbiology)を招致するための準備を行うことが、本研究の課題であった。この目的のため、静岡大学のメンバー(加藤憲二、早津雅仁、藤原健智、木村浩之)による検討会を頻繁に開いた後、2005年8月米国ワイオミング州ジャクソンホールで開催されたInternational Symposium on Subsurface Microbiology (Hosted by Frederick Colwell, Idaho National Engineering & Environmental Laboratory, U.S.A.)に加藤憲二、稲垣史生、木村浩之が参加し、国際委員会において加藤が招致のためのプレゼンテーションを行った。対立候補はドイツであったが、投票の結果5:3で2008年日本での開催が決定した。これを受けて、加藤は、静岡市コンベンションビューロとの話し合いを早速開始し、会場を静岡市駿河区のグランシップに確保するとともに、会議に関連する必要情報の収集を開始した。同時に、開催補助についての準備に着手した。会期は、2008年11月16日〜20日とし、我が国の地下圏微生物研究を推進する中堅で活力の高い研究者からなる実行委員会を組織した。実行委員会メンバー:加藤憲二(静岡大学)、山本啓之(海洋科学技術研究機構)、青木和弘(日本原子力機構)、稲垣史生(海洋科学技術研究機構)、高井 研(海洋科学技術研究機構)、長沼 毅(広島大学)、難波謙二(福島大学)
