本研究は、古代マヤ王朝の栄えたメキシコ エル・パルマール遺跡における宮殿の発掘と修復調査により、考古学研究において現在も根強く残っている、為政者の諸活動を直ちに王権の正当化に結びつけるマックス・ウェバーの合理的選択理論と方法論的個人主義の限界を克服することを目的とする。その際に、「宮殿内の貴族による日々の活動と王政は互いに影響を与えながら変化した。」という仮説を検証する。初年度は、5月から9月にかけて宮殿の中庭P1の調査を行った。まず、地中レーダーで中庭の下に埋められた前時代の建造物の存在を確認した。次に、中庭の内外の層位的発掘を実施して、中庭の北側を占める建造物S22-2における諸活動を検証した。その結果、中庭P1は古典期前期から何度も増改築され、その深さは４メートルに達することを明らかにした。また、建造物S22-2の倒壊した攪乱層からは貝製の胸飾りや首飾りが出土した。これは、中庭P1に住んでいた人々の地位の高さを示している。次に中庭P1の裏面に当たる西側を発掘すると、数万点以上の遺物や動物骨が出土した。遺物には、15年間の調査で出土しなかった多彩式土器片や鹿やペッカリーなどの大型動物の骨が、穀物を引くための乳棒を伴って見つかった。これらの埋蔵物は中庭P1の活動痕であることはほぼ間違いないが、それらが日常生活から排出されたゴミなのか、饗宴のような儀礼的活動痕なのかは未だに不明である。同時に中心部にある石碑の碑文解読作業も実施した。とりわけ、現在はカンペチェ州の博物館と倉庫に保管されている、石碑45と46を碑文解読者・図像学者を専門とする研究協力者と共に徹底的に分析した。その結果、石碑46の長期歴の解読によって後179年に建立されたことが明らかとなった。これまで低地マヤ地域で報告されている最古の長期歴はティカル遺跡の後292年であるが、今回の発見はそれを100年以上遡る。
