「インダス・湾岸地域の文明の盛衰と環境変動」を研究課題とする本研究班は、本年度は研究対象をさらに具体的に、現在発掘中のウンムッ=スジュール遺跡(バハレーン)の報告書刊行にむけての整理と、前年度末に行われたモエンジョ=ダロ遺跡(パキスタン)の保護・修景に関する実施調査のまとめにしぼって成果をあげた。また、通常の研究活動やシンポジウム等への出席のほか、以下の計3回の集中研究会を主催している。第1回:1992.6.19-21.於八王子・大学セミナーハウス。テーマ:『カタールのウンム=アンナール墳墓群とバハレーンのウンムッ=スジュール遺跡の発掘調査』。担当者全員(小西正捷・近藤英夫・後藤健・赤司善彦・中山誠二)による、各遺跡出土の遺構・遺物の細部にわたる検証とその性格に関する論議。また、今後の整理方法と研究分担の決定、特定遺物を選択した上でのデータベース作成のための打合せ。第2回:1992.9.5-6.於大学セミナーハウス。テーマ:『崩れ行く遺跡ー自然・社会環境の危機と修景』。発表:小西正捷「主旨説明と問題提起」;宗臺秀明「塩害に瀕するモエンジョ=ダロ」;宮城俊作「モエンジョ=ダロのランドスケープ・デザイン」;シャーバーズ・ハーン「崩壊するガンダーラ遺跡」;岡田保良「遺跡保存とイラクの沙漠環境」;遠藤宣雄「アンコール=ワットとその修復技術」;嵯峨創平「農村景観の保全と中間技術の伝承ー日本の事例」。第3回:1993.2.26-28.於中近東文化センター他。テーマ:『湾岸からインダスまでー考古学の最前線』。発表:ウテー・フランケ=フォクト「インダス文明と対西交渉」;大村幸弘「カマン=カレホユックの発掘成果」;小泉惠英「パキスタン・ハザーラー地方の初期歴史時代遺跡の予備的調査から」;佐々木達夫・佐々木花江「湾岸出土の陶磁器をめぐる諸問題」;江上波夫「湾岸考古学の可能性」。
