本研究は、重点領域研究「総合的地域研究の手法確立」のなかの計画研究班「総合的地域研究の概念」の公募研究として、3年間で終了する予定で計画されたものである。本年度は、研究の初年度ということで、本研究の参加者どうしの議論を通して、「中東地域研究」に関する共通の理解・認識を固め、次年度以降の研究の方向づけを確立することを目指して、研究会を3度にわたって開催した。本研究の参加者は、各自の問題関心に関連づけながら全員が研究発表を行なったが、学際的な視点に立ち、地域の枠に不必要に拘束されないという方針に基づいて、東南アジア研究者にもコメンテーターとして議論への参加を依頼し、多角的な視野から研究を進めた。また、本研究の参加者それぞれの関心に応じて、「総合的地域研究の手法確立」プロジェクトで開催された他の研究会にも参加し、中東に限定されない、より一般的な視野のもとで、地域研究に関する知識を得るとともに、同じく地域研究に関する知識獲得のため、中東を中心とした地域研究関連文献の収集も行なった。3度の研究会では、高谷教授が提出した「世界単位」の概念の検討に重点を置きながら議論を進めたが、とくにこの概念を中東に適用することが可能かどうかが焦点となった。そのため、議論の過程で出された問題点の多くは、この世界単位に関するものである。その主なものは、世界単位を設定する際のメルクマールの問題と地域というものをどのように設定するかという問題である。後者については、中東の場合、地域の属地的側面(面としての地域)だけでなく、属人的側面(ネットワークで結ばれる点としての地域)も無視できないのではないかとの議論が出された。来年度以降も引き続き世界単位が議論の中心になっていくものと思われるが、その際、これらの問題点が重要な検討課題となろう。
