未熟児の手、足の運動には一見すると乳児にみられるのと同じような運動が含まれていることがある。今回我々はこうした運動の中から、Hand-mouth-contact(H-M-C)とKickingについて検討した。未熟児を自然のまま裸で仰臥位で1時間、腹臥位で1時間ビデオ録画し、単位時間あたりのH-M-CとKickingの出現頻度を算出した。対象は17名のlow-riskの未熟児で在胎29週から34週の者である。生後1才半〜2才の発達はすべて正常であった。H-M-Cは約60%の観察で見られたが、右側がほとんどであり、顔の向きと完全に一致した。さらに、手を口に入れる前より口を開けているのが80%以上にみられた。このことはH-M-Cが一種の協調運動であり先天的に組みこまれたものであると考えられた。Kickingについては片足のみのものSK、両足同時にKickするDKと交互にKickするAKと分けて観察した。しかし、年令に応じた特異なパターンはなかった。しかし、仰臥位の方が腹臥位より多くKickingがみられ、泣いている時に有意に多く出現した。ネズミの実験とは違い、人のKickingは年令に応じた変化をせず、年令に特有のパターンもなかった。そして、体位や覚醒レベルによって影響をうけることもわかった。未熟児(つまり胎児が子宮外に出たもの)の運動の中に協調性の高いものが存在することはこれが後々の随意的な協調運動の前段階として存在している可能性を強く示唆するものといえよう。
