In recent years it has been found that, beyond traditional semiconductors, newly developed materials have interesting properties as electronic components. In addition to two-dimensional crystals based on transition metal chalcogenides, topological insulators and other surface-defined nanostructures show completely new aspects of solid-state physics and electrical transport. At the moment, these are difficult to produce with sufficient quality and structure. Their synthesis as colloidal nanomaterials is very promising, since this method offers a multitude of precise possibilities for influencing their structural properties. With the help of the requested probe station, the optoelectronic properties of such extended one- and two-dimensional colloidal nanostructures will to be investigated. In particular, the electrical transport mechanisms can be identified and characterized as a function of temperature and magnetic field. Since the energy differences and band gaps involved are quite small and the structures also have superconducting properties in some cases, corresponding low temperatures are necessary. For a complete characterization of transport processes the dependency on magnetic fields need to be characterized as well, which is why a cryostat with a built-in probestation for temperatures below 2 K and magnetic fields up to 9 T is requested.
