カミュの『シーシュポスの神話』で展開される「不条理」の思想が形成される以前の段階で、古代思想家たちの影響は極めて大きく、特にプロティノスの思想は、カミュに哲学的思考の形式を与えたという点で、きわめて重要な位置を占めている。カミュの初期思想における特徴的な考え方、人間のよきあり方としての、無垢な状態での「自然との一致」とそこから引き出される「幸福」な生という考え方は、プロティノスの存在なしでは引き出されない。プロティノスの『エネアデス』では人間の究極のあり方としての「幸福」が問われているのであり、それは神的な善なる一者との合一をめざして向き合うことであった。プロティノス的世界観では、一者より派生した、より劣った存在である魂と、さらにその下位に位置するする肉体との混合である人間は、その現実を直視し、自らを浄化し、肉体的なものから離れて、知性および神的なものと向かい合わなければならない。それは特権的な「賢者」において初めて可能であった。ところが、初期カミュ思想においては、「幸福」は特権的な「貧者」によって成就されうる。「幸福」は「特権的な者」において成就されるという考え方は共通するものの、無知で無垢な貧者が、肉体と世界の現実に向かい、ついには自然と一体化して幸福となるというその方向性は、プロティノスとは180度異なる。古代の思想家であるプロティノスは、永遠なる完全な存在としての一者と、不死なる魂を完全に肯定し、死すべき肉体である人間存在を不条理なものとしているものの、その不条理を軽蔑すべきものとして直視しない。現代の思想家であるカミュはそのような大前提を立てない。永遠と思われるものは、人間存在に無関心な自然であり、人間に不死的なものはなく、世界を前にして人間は、死すべき存在としての自らの不条理性に対峙せざるを得なくなる。カミュ的な世界では、ソクラテス・プラトン的な愛知の生き方は、人間の必須の義務ではなく、むしろ何ものも所有せず無垢なものとなるべきなのである。カミュ思想はギリシァ思想によって形式を与えられているものの、世界観においてまったく袂を分かっている。無垢な貧者の幸福を言うのであって、その姿勢はむしろキリスト教的ですらある。つまり、カミュは西欧伝統思想の流れの中にあって、知性と宗教のいずれをも究極のあり方としない第三の人間のあり方を探ったのであるが、初期においてはそのような自覚は明瞭なものでなく、自然との合一はきわめてロマン的なものであった。初期思想において見られるこのロマン的なものが、『シーシュポスの神話』においては、古典的なものに再び置き換わっている。このゆれ動きをさらに追求することが今後の課題である。この研究は、12月23日に開催されたカミュ研究会において一部が口頭発表された。2006年は、フランスの研究者、ジャンイヴ・ゲラン教授と意見交換することによってこの研究をさらに深め、論文の形で発表する予定である。
