We studied about the high performance drive method of switched reluctance motors using direct torque control technique that is useful in the driving of induction motors and blushless DC motors. Because the torque of switched reluctance motors is not simply proportion to the motor's flux that contrary on the case of induction motors and blushless DC motors, existing methods used in such motors can not be simply extended to switched reluctance motors. Our purpose is to develop a torque direct control method that is suitable for switched reluctance motors, and then use the method to reduce the torque ripple problem of switched reluctance motors.1) We studied from the principle of direct torque control about switched reluctance motors, not only from theoretic analysis, but fined out the physical meaning. Such important knowledge are helpful for intuitively understand of the principle, as well as useful for proposing some new driving methods.2) We construct a simulation model using Malab/Si … More mulink software in order to exam the results of above studies. Based on the simulation model, we can testify different direct torque control methods in order to reduce the torque ripple.3) An experimental set has been made, using our proposed method we have succeeded for the direct torque control of switched reluctance motors. Using the torque meter equipment that is required in our proposal, we find out that the torque ripple waveform is reduced clearly.4) Speed control is very important in the drive of motors, but the relationship of speed command and flux in switched reluctance motors is not clear. We find out a table to express the relation of speed command and flux based on the magnetic characteristic of motors, sing the table, a wide rang of speed can be controlled very well.5) We studied about speed sensorless control method. Even the direct torque control technique dose not necessary position or speed sensor in principle, but in the speed control system of motors, the speed sensor is usual needed. We notice that the rotated flux vector is necessary in direct torque control technique, and the angel of the rotated flux vector is very similar to the position of the motor's rotor because switched reluctance motors are synchronous machines.
