1)平成7年度の成果をふまえて、平成8年度の研究課題を次のように設定し行った。平成7年度に構築した、「実測図をイメージスキャナーで読み込んでパソコンで自動処理し、内容量を計測するシステム」の実践と、さらに「陶器類の粘土使用量を簡単に迅速に計測するためのプログラムの設定」、「それらを含めた全般的なシステムの構築」であった。2)資料を使って、「容量自動計測システム」を動かしてみた。使用した資料は、最近大変な話題となっている、縄文時代最大級の集落遺跡「三内丸山遺跡」出土の縄文式土器である。この遺跡からは、前期から後期にかけての土器が1万点以上出土しているが、今回は、そのうちの整理済み実測図470枚の処理を行った。その結果、実測図を読み込んで処理し計算するのに1枚約5分ほどかかった。この時間を短いと考えるか長いと考えるかは別にして、かなりの処理が短期間に可能であるとの確信はもちえることとなった。この土器のデータ処理にあたっては、ただ単に容量を計測すればよいというものではなく、その数値をどのように、研究上有効なデータとするかという視点から、得られた数値のデータベース化、グラフ化をほどこすためのシステムを構築した。3)「粘土量を計測する」ために必要なプログラム他の設計を行って、「三内丸山遺跡」のデータを実施した結果、有効なものであることがわかった。3)さらに大量の実測図を処理するために、校内の高速イーサーネットLANを利用して、読み込みファイルの交換と数値計算を行ってみた。ネットワーク上では、5台のコンピュータと4台のイメージスキャナーを利用した。(2)で示したように、「三内丸山遺跡」のデータを1日150枚ほど処理したが、さらに効率よく大量に行うため、どのようなシステムがよいか考えてみなければならない。
