浮世絵データベースの画像内容検索(インデクシング)を実現するために、画像データベースシステムの基本的な仕様、画像内容検索を行うために必要なさまざまなデータ、そのデータを処理する手法について検討した。本年度の研究では、(1)浮世絵に含まれている対象クラスに基づく画像内容検索法、(2)画像データベースを構築するためのインタフェースシステムの設計に集中した。対象クラス別の画像内容検索のための方法は、ある与えられている対象クラスの特徴である色、テクスチャー、画像上の位置を用い、モデル画像とインスタンス画像の間の特徴別なマッチングを行ない、得られたマッチング結果をニューラルネットワークに入力する。ニューラルネットワークは与えられている対象クラスが画像の中で存在しているかどうか、または、その対象クラスのインスタンスが画像内のどこの場所にあるか、について最終的な判断を行なう。画像データベースを構築するためのインタフェースシステムは、データベースに登録する浮世絵の選択、データベースに登録する対象クラスの決定、データベースに登録するモデル画像の選択、データベースに登録されている浮世絵の検索(認識)を行なうためのさまざまな入出力方法をユーザに提供する。本システムを将来的にインターネットに接続させらるために、このシステム要素をJava言語で実現している。
