官営工房は、国家が生産手段と原材料を提供して生産を行い、製品を国家が独占する生産方式であり、技術力・生産力が低い奈良時代(710-784)にあっては重要な生産形態である。その組織のあり方、運営方法の解明は国家機構そのものの解明に連なる。本研究は百万塔を資料に、その工房の実態を明らかにしようとする。百万塔は藤原仲麻呂の反乱鎮圧を契機に製作した三重の木造小塔(764-770)であり、名は百万基という製作数に由来し、内部に最古の印刷物である陀羅尼経を収めることで名高い。その製作期間は僅か5年半。塔身、相輪と陀羅尼経を各百万製作する必要があり、大事業である。この工房の運営形態が復元できれば、古代の官営工房研究に大きく貢献するであろう。工房の復元には、工人の数や勤務実態を明らかにする必要がある。百万塔には日付や工人名の墨書が残る。これを手懸かりに、その工房規模や運営状態を復元しようとする。百万塔墨書は工房における製品の管理や、製作数の把握のために記したのであり、最終的に仕上げの白土によって消されている。墨書は癖字や略字が多い上に、製作から1,200年あまりの時を経て塔表面の風化が進み、文字の保存状態は必ずしもよくない。本研究では墨書画像DBの作成を行い、それとコンピュータソフトを用いて墨書の判別方法の検討を試みた。古代史の熟練研究者が経験と勘に頼ってきた判別を、機械で行うことが出来れば、他の文字類の判別にも有用であるし、能率もも向上しよう。ここでは「高次局所自己相関特徴」による判別を行い、木簡研究者4人の判別結果と照合した。その結果、2名はコンピュータの答えに近かった。以上は「高次局所自己相関特徴」方法が百万塔の墨書にも有効であることを示唆する。
