项目摘要

本研究は百万塔の筆跡1万件を図像情報としてD・B化し、コンピュータ判別方法によって、工房の規模等を再構成するもの。工人の筆跡は癖字が多い上に、姓名を書く例が少なく、姓、名前を1字に略すこと、音通の別字(虎→乕)、「代筆」があり複雑である。本研究の課題は、これら文字をいかに判別するかである。本年は「浄人」「和万呂」「龍万呂」など複数の文字を対象とし比較研究した。資料の選択と比較のねらいは、(1)同一人物と思われる文字の比較。(2)異体字がある場合、同一人か否か判別が可能か。(3)右利き左利きによる違いがあるか否か、であり、コンピュータと同時に古代史研究者の肉眼判別を試みた。ただし、異体字のうち同一人か否かの判別と、利き腕の違いは現状では不可能であった。文字認識の概略は、(イ)対象文字の選定。(ロ)スキャナ取り込み。切り出し、ノイズ除去。(ハ)線形正規化(外接枠合わせ)、輪郭線抽出。(ニ)小領域抽出。(ホ)特徴抽出。(ヘ)非学習文字を使っての認識。となる。両者の判定結果は「浄人」では、異なるが、「和万呂」「龍万呂」「乕」では概ね一致する。「浄人」の判別が異なる最大理由は、文字が複雑であること、墨書を覆う白土が文字のエッジを不明確にしたことなど。後者は、人間より機械の判別が細かく厳密な傾向にある。これは計算ソフトに細分化と同時に、近いものを合わせる仕組みを考えるべきと思う。いずれにしても、この方法は効果的である。今後の改良を期待したい。百万塔の署名は、工人の自署としてきた。しかし右の検討を通じて、異なる手=代筆が多いとみても不合理ではない。自署と考えたのは、これに賃金伝票の機能を想定したからであるが、当時は手実により仕事内容を自己申告するので、製品に賃金用の墨書は不要との見方が有力である。写経所での写経事業は、一写経事業の発令から決算に至る過程毎に事務手続きがあり、記録掌握のために多数の帳簿を作成した。写経生等は仕事毎に手実で申告をし、責任者はこれと製品をつきあわせ仕事量を把握、布施の基礎としたという。手実はある期-1月単位など-ごとに提出する。百万塔墨書がこれに類するなら、それほど厳密性は必要でなく、「代筆」があって困ることはない。本研究は研究の途上にあるが、現時点の成果から表題を見通すと、右の結論に達する。
