『明月記』の研究では、治承四・五年記を始めとして四箇所の記事のテキストを確定し、その注釈と現代語訳を行ない、さらに定家の古典研究のあり方や、『明月記』の本文、写本の研究など幅広く行ってきた。それらの成果は『明月記研究』1〜7号(続群書類従刊行会)、および五味文彦『『明月記』の史料学』(青史出版、二〇〇〇年七月)に報告した。次に『吾妻鏡』については後世の写本しか残されていないため、北条本や吉川本などの写本の収集を広く行い、『吾妻鏡』の表現方法を吟味してきたが、その成果は『明月記研究』5号(続群書類従刊行会、一九九九年十一月刊)と、五味文彦『増補『吾妻鏡』の方法』(吉川弘文館、二〇〇〇年十月刊)に報告した。以上において、『明月記』、日記としての特質が明らかになり、また『明月記』を歴史学・国文学においていかに活用されるべきか、その利用法が明確になってこの時代における古典学の位置を見定めることが可能となった。『吾妻鏡』については、本文を形成する地の文、文書、交名の三つのそれぞれの性格が明らかとなり、『吾妻鏡』にはどのような編纂意図があったのか、編纂したのは誰か、といった従来からの疑問が解けてきたの同時に、室町時代以降にいかに写本が形成され、何を目的にそれらの写本がつくられたのか、またその写本の在り方などについても明らかとなった。そしてこの二つの古典の研究を通じて、中世の古典がどのような状況から生み出されたのか、またその古典としての認識がどのようになされたのかも明らかになり、古典学の研究をこれから進めるについての方法や認識が深められた。
