対象としたのはEBウイルス陽性T細胞増殖症・リンパ腫(以下PTPD)患者100人に、対照群として同地域に住む健常者100人である。PTPD患者とEBウイルス陽性健常者における血漿中のEBVゲノムについてPCR法により検索した。健常者では全く検出されなかったウイルスゲノムが全ての患者血漿中で検出され、そのうち85.7%についてはそのDNA抽出方法からウイルス粒子由来であることが示唆された。患者と健常者の間に見られる明白な違いから、血漿中に存在するウイルスゲノムはPTPDを診断する上での指標の1つに成り得ることがわかった。PTPD患者の血中TNF-aレベルを測定した。その結果、患者においてTNF-α濃度は有意に高いこと、末梢CD3陽性細胞にEBVゲノム陽性の患者では、陰性の患者より有意にTNF-αレベルが高いことが判った。また、陽性者の中では、TNF-αレベルはLMP-1に欠失を持つEBV感染者の方が、野生型のLMP-1を持つ者より有意に低かった。TNF-aレベルと予後に関しては、死亡群で高いTNF-αレベルを示すことがわかり、経過のモニタにTNF-αレベルを取り入れることが考えられた。Il-10の血漿中レベルを測定したところ、患者の方が有意に高かった。

There were 100 patients with sexual T-cytopathic disease (the following PTPD) and 100 normal people living in the same area in the same area.
