本研究では、近世後期江戸語から明治期東京語における謙譲語と通常語の使用を明らかにすることを目的とし、考察を行なった。将来的には、この成果をさらに丁寧語の体系、待遇表現の体系へと発展させることを考えている。最終年度は、前年度までに数度生じた、分類基準や考察方法の変更により、予定よりも遅れが生じたため、研究計画を「〈行く・来る〉の体系という意味領域の枠組みを設けた考察」に変更した。さらに、「第三者に対して使用される」という限定をやめ、「聞き手に対して使用される」場合をも含めて再考することにした。そして、遅れていた用例の確認作業と再考、残っている通常語（ただし、〈行く・来る〉の意味を表すものに限定せず、「ます」下接の用例をすべて）の用例の確認作業と再考を行なった。結果は、内輪ではあるが研究会にて口頭発表を行ない（3回）、考察を深めることができた。内容は、計画を変更する前に用例を収集し考察を行なっていた、近世後期江戸語における謙譲語形式（「お（ご）＋動詞連用形＋いたす」、「お（ご）＋動詞連用形＋もうす」、「動詞連用形＋いたす」、「動詞連用形＋もうす」）の使用についての考察と、明治期における〈行く・来る〉の謙譲語についての考察である。最終年度の後期は、体調不良のため、研究計画を遂行し続けることや学会での発表や投稿にまで至らなかったが、現在、執筆作業を進めている。研究期間全体を通じて、本研究では、第三者に対して使用される謙譲語の使用を知るために、聞き手に対して使用される謙譲語の使用をも含めた用例収集と考察を行なうことができた。また、近世後期江戸語から明治期東京語における謙譲語の使用について、分類基準という根本的な問題から、使用される人間関係や場面までの広い範囲で考えを深めることができた。これは、今後研究を進めるにあたっての基礎的な研究をすることができたと考えられる。
