The study of new visual illusions: Approaches from experimental psychology, brain function imaging and mathematical analyses

Visual illusion was investigated from multiple viewpoints. A variety of new illusions was reported. In particular, it was revealed and discussed that the color-dependent motion illusion in a stationary image shows an illusory motion in a constant direction in a bright condition whereas it displays motion illusion in the reverse direction in a dark condition. The distorted concentric circle illusion, a kind of spiral illusion, was analyzed mathematically. The adaptation method using the fMRI technique revealed that not only hMT+ but V1 responds to the "Rotating snakes" illusion.
