初年次である本年度は以下の三つの課題を並行して行い、それぞれ成果を得た。第一に、ラ・コスト『天然痘の種痘に関する手紙』（1723）からラ・コンダミーヌ『天然痘の種痘に関する覚書』（1754）までの関連史料を時系列に整理し、種痘論争初期史を再検討した。フランス王国内における当時の政治・社会情勢の変化、特に摂政オルレアン公フィリップの死や、内科医・外科医論争を筆頭とする他の医学論争が種痘論争に与えた影響を具体的に解明した。本課題については既に雑誌論文で成果を公表している。第二に、18世紀中葉に創刊された二つの医学専門誌『ジュルナル・ド・メドゥシーヌ』と『ガゼット・サリュテール』が種痘論争において担った役割について分析した。調査の結果、両誌は他の定期刊行物と同様、種痘論争の論者と公衆を仲介する役割を果たし、読者の関心を惹くための様々な工夫を凝らしていたことが判明した。だが重要な点は、より多くの読者に自らの公的有用性を訴えるため、パリ大学医学部の内科医が種痘論争というトピックを利用し、従来管轄外であったジャーナリズムを自家薬籠中の物にした事実である。したがって医学専門誌は、種痘の問題に限らず、18世紀フランスにおける医学と公衆の関係全般を考えるうえで重要な史料と言える。本課題については既に研究会で口頭発表を行ったうえ、雑誌論文で成果を公表している。第三に、種痘論争における「公衆」概念の歴史的変遷について分析する作業に着手した。1754年以前の論者は基本的に「公衆」を医学的・政治的権威を指す語彙として使用していたが、ラ・コンダミーヌ演説以降、「公衆」は読者やオーディエンスという意味も包含するようになり、論者によって指示対象の異なる複雑な概念となったことが判明した。本課題については現在も取り組んでおり、来年度に雑誌論文で成果を公表する予定だが、既に複数の研究会で口頭発表を行っている。
