本研究では、知的障害や自閉症などの重度障害をもつ人々が心理的な側面を含めて地域に参加し共生していくための具体的な方法論について検討していくことを目的とした。具体的には、重度障害をもつ人の交通機関の利用について取り上げた。職場や学校などの限定された空間とは異なり、交通機関の利用は、障害をもたない健常といわれる多くの一般の人々とさまざまな特徴的な行動を示す障害をもつ人々が相互作用を行う環境である。そこでは、一般の人々と障害をもつ人々との関わりが促進されることも考えられるが、その反対に一般の人々との関わりのなかで障害をもつ人々の社会参加が阻害されることも想定される。従来、このような公共的な場面での障害をもつ人々の社会参加に関する研究は非常に少ないばかりでなく、障害をもつ人々の社会参加が一般の人々の“受け入れ"や“態度"という概念で説明されており、社会参加のための具体的な方法について検討されてきていない。本研究では、これらの問題に対して障害をもつ人々の社会参加の促進のための具体的な方法について実証的に究明することをねらいとしている。研究では、養護学校高等部に通う1名の自閉症生徒を対象にした。本生徒に、自宅から養護学校までバスや電車を利用して通学するために必要な諸技能の形成を行った。通学に必要な諸技能について形成していくとともに、交通機関を利用していくなかで本生徒と一般の人々との関わりについて記録・分析していった。本生徒が養護学校を卒業するまでこれらの記録を続けていった。その結果、重度知的障害を有する本自閉症生徒が通学に必要な諸技能を習得できることだけでなく、学校を卒業するまで3年間単独で通学できたことが示された。一般の人との関わりについては、本生徒の特徴的な行動に対して一般の人々からさまざまな反応が示された。これらの反応は、生徒の行動に起因して生起したものであるが、その生起には社会的な要因が強く関与していることが示された。そして、それらの要因が物理的な環境設定によって変容可能であることが示唆された。つまり、それらの物理的環境設定の変更によって、障害をもつ人々の健常と言われる多くの一般の人々が生活する社会への参加が促進されることが示された。
