発達障害児・者が地域で自立した生活を行うためには、地域の健常な人々との適切な関わりが必要である。そこで、本研究では地域の人々の障害をもつ人々に対する社会的な容認性について評価し、地域への組織的な介入を行うための環境変数について明らかにすることを目的とした。本研究は、養護学校への自主通学のために電車やバスを利用した交通機関の利用を指導された1名の自閉症生徒を対象にした。自閉症は、コミュニケーションや対人関係の不全など一般の人と比較して特異的な行動特徴を有している。まず、1名の自閉症生徒が交通機関を利用して通学している様子をビデオ記録した。その記録を、30名の大学生に視聴させ印象を自由記述させた。これをK・J法を用いて関連する内容毎に整理・統合しカテゴリー分類をして質問項目を作成した。質問項目の妥当性を高めるために、この質問項目を131名の一般成人(大学生、専門学校生、教・職員)に先のビデオを視聴させその印象を評定させた。この結果を因子分析し、社会的妥当性の評定項目として9項目の質問を作成した。社会的妥当性は、50名のバス乗務員、45名の公務員、47名の専門学校生によって評価された。評定手続きは、ビデオテープを視聴させ、5段階のリッカート型の評定尺度とされた9項目の質問に「そう思う」から「そう思わない」までその印象を記述させた。得られた結果は、項目毎に3群でカイ2乗検定を行った。その結果、落ちつきや社会性に関する項目において有意な差異が検出された。また、それぞれの評定者へのインタビューによって障害をもつ人々の職種による対応の違いが明らかになった。これらの結果は、障害者の地域生活のための組織的な援助を行うときの重要な環境変数を示すものであり、今後、今回同定された環境変数に関する実証的研究を実施してその組織的な環境介入の体系化を行うことが課題とされた。
