项目摘要

本研究の目的は、主に文献研究によって、米英仏および日本の近代社会運動史を比較社会学的に検討することであった。私は、まず米英仏および日本の最新の社会運動史研究を収集の上通読するとともに、統計データベースソフトを用いてその内容を指標化し、集合的に把握することを試みた。その結果、アメリカの最近の文献の多くに、従来の集合行動論的視野から歴史社会学的視野への変化がみられた。また量的には、とくに60年代の社会運動の歴史研究の蓄積が著しく進んでいる。また仏英など西欧の研究に通底して、資本主義経済と民衆生活との対抗に焦点を当てる視野から、文化や表象上の変動に変容に焦点を当てる視野への転換がみられた。これに対して、日本の社会運動史研究は、いまだ戦後社会運動史への客観的な歴史社会学的研究が発展する機運は見られず、従来の資本主義経済と日民衆生活との対抗に焦点を当てる視野からの展開も見られない、ある種の停滞状態にあるといえる。言い換えれば、戦後日本の社会運動は歴史的知識として洗練されることなく、忘却されつつあるといえよう。一方、西欧の社会運動史研究にも次のような問題がみられた。文化・表象上の変容に注目する視野は、往々にして民衆運動を前近代的な社会的価値への復帰の試みとして把握しがちである。それらが描き出す社会性はたしかにユートピア的魅力をもつが、論理上必ず近代的な価値(資本主義経済)に敗北するか、近代的な価値の底に覆い隠される運命にあることになってしまう。ある種の敗北史観に陥っているのである。逆に民衆生活の近代を描き出そうとする研究は、社会運動史ではなく生活史や娯楽史を専らの対象としている。旧来の労働運動史のようにではなく、民衆運動の近代史の理論と実証研究が西欧の研究においても課題とされているのである。今後の課題は、戦後日本の社会運動史を民衆運動の近代史として理論的に分析し、西欧とくにアメリカのそれと比較することである。そこにこそ民衆生活次元での近代日本社会の特質を把握し得る。
