富山県新湊市の宮林家と新潟県能生町の伊藤家の史料調査を行い、両家所蔵文書の整理とマイクロカメラでの撮影を行った。分析の結果、両家ともに19世紀に日本海海運で活躍した船持商人であったが、明治期の両家の経営展開はかなり異なっていたことが判明した。宮林家は、18世紀は網元として大規模に鰯漁を行っていたが、19世紀前半に和船を所有して領主米を輸送したり北海道へ進出して買積経営を行った。同家は海運経営から上がった利益をもとに幕末から明治期にかけて土地取得を進め、明治35年時点で約41町歩の耕地を所有した。海運経営は明治になると縮小し、松方デフレで損失を出したためか明治20年前後に海運経営を止めた。地元会社には明治初年から積極的に関わり、明治10年の第十二国立銀行設立の際には取締役となり、明治14年の越中風帆船会社設立の際にはその有力な出資者となった。伊藤家は、18世紀は小型和船を1隻所有し、ローカルな回漕業を営んでいたが、19世紀になると大型和船を多数所有するようになり、活動範囲も北海道から瀬戸内・畿内に及んだ。宮林家と同様に伊藤家も土地取得を行ったが、宮林家ほどに大規模には行わず、むしろ明治期には西洋型風帆船を購入するなど、海運経営を発展させた。そして本店を能生町から北海道の小樽へ移転し、活動の拠点を北海道においた。新潟県の地元会社への関わりはほとんど見られず、地域経済とのつながりは薄かった。両家の地域経済への関わり方の相違は、両家の地域社会での存在形態と地域社会の自然も含めた歴史的経緯のあり方に規定されたと考えられる。すなわち、宮林家は近世期から村役人を努めていたのに対し、伊藤家は努めておらず、また新湊市は生産力の高い平野部にあったのに対し、能生町は山と海に挟まれて耕地が乏しかった。
