大田南畝についての従来の研究は彼の文学的な名声と幕臣としての地位の低さとの断絶を「不遇意識」の語を中心に解釈し、天明末年に起こった戯作界からの離脱という伝記的な問題も、彼の処世術において現世的欲求は文学に優先するか否か、ないしは戯作文学が人生を託するに足るものである否か、といった射程から考察されることが多かった。本研究では、南畝が文学的な絶頂の時期から現世的秩序からの離脱、すなわち「隠逸」への志向を強く持っていたという事実を端緒にして、南畝の思想・行動に果たした隠逸概念さらには老荘思想の意義に検討を加えること、また南畝のごとくの発想の江戸期における流れを確認することを研究の課題とし、彼の処世を支える思想の解明にあたった。調査・研究の結果、南畝が属した徂徠学未流の松崎観海の門下にあっては、多様な隠逸概念を駆使することで、隠逸志向と現実世界の秩序への対応を調和的に解釈しようとする思想傾向の強いことを明らかにした。そして、その思想の背景に、老子や荘子の歴史的に置かれた立場をより現実に引きつけ、自己に近いものであると理解する認識論(それは必ずしも老荘思想そのものから直接導かれるものではない)が存在したことをあわせて明らかにした。これらの結論を導き出すに際しては、南畝や彼の周辺の人々が著した多くの著作の入手と、その精査を期した。
