A study of competitive learning in physical education

Sports are acquiring increasing importance as learning content in physical education classes. In addition to being a form of play and physical activity, another quality of sports is competition.In this study, cases of efforts to use sports games in physical education classes were collected from the literature on physical education curricula, and are discussed. While it must be mentioned that in some efforts the negative aspects of competition were overlooked, it was found that some programs aimed. to increase the indeterminateness of the results of competition, while other programs aimed to make rankings or the results of competition unclear or to weaken competitiveness. Offering achievement-typed competition, avoiding facile use of handicaps, and eliminating make-work competition used only to motivate are pointed out as necessary in order to make students understand sports more deeply and to make physical education learning satisfactory.After learning ball games in physical education classes, fifth and sixth grade elementary school boys and girls were surveyed by questionnaire to ascertain their level of understanding of sports competition. Through factor analysis, 8 factors were extracted from their understanding of sports competition. In the analysis, the most important factor was motivation to achieve, This is a quality also possessed by competition in general. The quality of exclusivity is pointed out as a negative factor in competition in general, but the quality of exclusivity was denied in the understanding of sports competition in physical education classes on the part of the boys and girls targeted by the survey. This denial of exclusivity was the second most important factor. Other factors in their understanding of sports competition in physical education classes were, sports matches are enjoyable, sports require a spirit of honest, fair play, and the results of games contain an element of chance.
