项目摘要

本研究、大衆文化としての映画を支配するメロドラマ的想像力とミュージカル的想像力とを人間の基本的認識パターンの相補的な一組として仮定し、両者の構造を比較・検討し、その特質と意義を解明するのみならず、両者の相互関係を具体例に則して分析することを目的としている。今回の研究では、萌芽的研究段階として、ハリウッド映画の最盛期とされる30〜50年代、特に大不況期から第二次世界大戦へと至る時期に限定し、この時期におけるメロドラマとミュージカルの作品群に対して包括的分析を試みた。1930〜1940年代のアメリカ映画の中からミュージカル、メロドラマに分類可能なものを特定し、そのデータ・ベースを興行成績の高いものから順次作成した。ミュージカルについては更にバックステージもの、アメリカ-ナもの、伝記もの、フェアリ-・テ-ルといった下位ジャンルへと分類・整理した上で、下位ジャンル相互間の関係および作品の内部構造のパターンを計量的に分析した。メロドラマについても、母子メロドラマ、恋愛メロドラマ、歴史メロドラマなど下位ジャンルへと分類・整理した上で、下位ジャンル相互間の関係および作品の内部構造のパターンを計量的に分析した。更に、メロドラマ的ミュージカル、ミュージカル形式のメロドラマの作品群について、この二つのジャンルの相互浸透関係のパターンを探り、計量的分析に着手した。映画関係諸機関によって資料の補充を行った。現有設備であるコンピュータ等を連動させるべく整備・増設を行うと共に、アメリカ映画関係図書を補充し、分析・研究の高度化を図った。更に学生アルバイトを採用し、資料の整理、データ・ベース化を進めている。研究成果の一部は研究代表者および分担者の論文という形で公表しているが、データ・ベース自体も、設備・資料を整備しつつ、完成・公表を目指して鋭意作業中である。
