本研究は、日本の歴史人口学において、長い間未解決であった問題を取り扱った。それは、宗門改帳における出生の過少記録に関する問題である。この問題は、宗門改帳から乳児死亡率だけではなく、出生率をも正確に推計することを妨げており、日本の歴史人口学の発展のネックとなっていた。乳児死亡率の推計については、宗門改帳からの情報だけではなく、明治・大正期の人口動態統計を使い、宗門改帳から引き出される乳児死亡に関する指標を初年死亡率と定義して、それと乳児死亡率との関係から乳児死亡率を推計した。この方法を東北地方の村の宗門改帳に応用してみたところ、妥当な推計値が得られ、この方法の妥当性が確認された。この方法は簡潔で、多くの計算を必要としないので、他地域の宗門改帳にも簡単に応用することができるのが利点である。宗門改帳における出生の過少記録のレベルの推計については、現実的な再生産モデルをもとにしたマイクロシミュレーションの手法を用いた。シミュレーションの結果、出生の過少記録のレベルは乳児死亡率のレベルと正の相関関係があるが、徳川時代の乳児死亡率のレベルでは、宗門改帳に記録された出生は、実際の出生よりも15パーセントから18パーセント程度過少に記録されている可能性が高いことが判明した。近年の歴史人口学の研究では、このレベルを20パーセントと仮定することが多かったが、本研究の結果からすると、この仮定はやや過大に見積もられているという結論が導き出された。本研究では、シミュレーションを使って、宗門改帳の記録日により、出生の過少記録のレベルが大きく影響されるのかどうかという問題についても検証した。この問題に対する結果は否定的なもので、宗門改帳の記録日の違いは、懸念されるほどには出生率の推計値に影響を与えないことがわかった。最後に、異なるサイズの小集団における出生率の変動を実験的に検証してみた。この結果は、小集団の出生率の変動に関するひとつの指標を与え、断片的な宗門改帳を扱う際の助けとなるであろう。
