本研究は,歴史人口学におけるグラフィックス,特に3次元グラフィックスの有用性を検証することを目的とした。その理由としては,歴史人口学者は日常的に暦年,年齢,人口指標という3変数を同時に扱うことが多いということ,およびグラフィックス機能が充実したソフトウェアが最近一般に出回ってきたことがあげられる。本研究では,山形県天童市内旧山家村に残された1760年から1870年にわたる110年あまりの宗門改帳を人口資料として使い,この村の人口構成,出生率および死亡率の算出および3次元グラフィックス化を行い,その歴史人口学的な意味を検討した。まず,人口構成の3次元グラフィックスは人口全体の趨勢を知るだけではなく,出生と人口移動のトレンドに関する予測を可能にする。出生に関しては,年齢別出生率と有配偶出生率の3次元グラフィックスを試みた。これらの図は,それぞれの人口指標の趨勢を把握することに役立つだけではなく,異常と思えるようなデータを見つけ出すことにも有効である。死亡については,死亡分布と年齢別死亡確率の3次元グラフィックスを作成した。これらの図から,あたかも鳥瞰図をみるように,死亡分布が手に取るようによくわかること,および男女間の微妙な死亡パターンの違いも見つけ出すことができる。これから判断すれば,人口指標の3次元グラフィックスは,従来の2次元表示に比べ,研究対象の人口学的特徴を把握するのに適している。このような3次元グラフィックスは,研究者にとってただ単に表示された人口指標を視覚的に捉えるということのみにとどまらず,それを観察することによって研究を次のステップへ導いてくれるというメリットもあり,今後の歴史人口学研究にもっと利用されるべきであるという結論に至った。

The purpose of this study is to investigate the usefulness of historical demography, especially in the third dimension.
