项目摘要

度量句と形容詞の組み合わせには、解釈と表現の複雑な対応関係が通言語的に見られる。英語では"X is 10cm tall"のように形容詞tallに度量句10cmが修飾した場合は、10cmはXの絶対的な高さを表す。一方、"X is 10cm taller"の比較構文においては、10cmはXと基準の高さの差を表す。このように度量句と形容詞の組み合わせは2種類の解釈をもたらす。しかし、スペイン語では"10cm taller"に対応する表現はあるが、"10cm tall"に対応する表現はない。一方、-erのような比較を表す形態素を持たない日本語では、度量句と形容詞の唯一の組み合わせである「Xは１０ｃｍ高い」は差を表す解釈のみをもつ。このような複雑な解釈と表現の対応関係を獲得するには、子供は周囲の大人の発話をもとに、自分の母語において可能な解釈と表現の対応関係を習得しなければならない。本研究は、子供がどのようにこの対応関係を獲得するかを明らかにするため、日本語と英語を母語とする子供の「Xは（Yより）10cm高い」/"X is 10cm taller (than Y)"のような比較構文の解釈を調べた。比較の形態素の有無にかかわらず、日本語児も英語児もこれらの構文を‘X is 10cm tall’のように絶対的に解釈した。また「Yより」/"than Y"の基準を表す句がある場合にも同様に解釈した。６歳の子供もこの比較構文を絶対的に解釈すること、また「XはYより高い」のような基本的な比較構文は正しく解釈できることから、子供は比較構文に関して大人と同じ統語的・意味的知識をもち、度量句を導入する主要部の意味的制約に従うものの、大人と異なり比較の基準をゼロにとってしまうがために ‘X is 10cm taller (than zero)’のような絶対的な解釈をしてしまうと結論づけた。
