近代日本の宝石珊瑚製造漁は世界一の漁獲量があった。製造・加工業の盛んなイタリアでは、その原料の9割以上が日本から輸入した珊瑚樹であった。近世日本では、珊瑚加工製品は輸入品であり、長崎を経て国内各地へ売られた。それが近代になって、高知県沖をはじめ、長崎県、鹿児島県ほかでも採取されるようになり、にわかに日本近海の特定海域が珊瑚漁漁場となる。これまで宝石漁と珊瑚の流通・貿易・国の珊瑚行政については、本格的な歴史研究はないので、本研究はその嚆矢に位置づけられる研究となろう。また、宝石珊瑚の漁場と採取拠点は黒潮流域の地域（黒潮圏）にあり、黒潮圏の歴史的生業の一つとして研究するものである。近代日本の宝石珊瑚に関する史料の悉皆調査を期して、以下の史料調査と収集史料の整理、研究を進めた。１、主要産出県のうち、高知県に関しては高知県水産試験場、長崎県に関しては長崎歴史文化博物館所蔵の長崎県庁文書の調査、鹿児島県については、鹿児島県水産技術開発センタ－等で過去の事業報告書等の史料収集を実施した。２、小笠原諸島（当時、東京府下）の戦前における珊瑚漁関係の史資料の調査と収集を進めた。東京都公文書館、小笠原村役場の所蔵文書について調査を実施した。３、イタリアの珊瑚加工・製造地の現地調査と資料収集を実施した。珊瑚加工技術導入のために名誉領事が置かれたリボルノの現地調査を実施した。また、イタリアの珊瑚貿易史料の収集を実施した。さらに、海外調査では、戦前は日本統治下にあった台湾の珊瑚漁に関して、史資料の調査と収集を実施した。国立台湾図書館、台湾海洋大学海洋文化研究所などで史資料を収集するとともに、蘇澳（宜蘭県）の現地調査も実施した。28年度は病気により、手術やその後の加療のため研究を進めることができず、28年度の事業を29年度まで事業を延長することを申請し、承認された。研究のとりまとめも進める。
