占領期の日本本土における駐留米軍のスポーツ活動の実態を明らかにすべく、2022年8月8日から8月17日まで、アメリカ国立公文書館新館（NationalArchives and Records Administration Ⅱ；メリーランド州カレッジパーク市）にて史料調査を実施した。具体的には、始めに同館のアーキビストのJacob Haywood氏と面談し、調査すべき史料群について助言をいただいた。その結果、今回はアメリカ海軍史料Record Group 24：Records of the Bureau of Naval Personnel（海軍人事局記録群）と、Record Group 313：Records of Naval Operating Forces（海軍作戦部隊記録群）を対象に調査をする事となった。調査の結果、陸軍同様、海軍においてもアメリカンフットボールのみならず、野球・ソフトボール、バスケットボール、テニス、ゴルフ、水泳、ダイビング、レスリング、ボクシング、フェンシング、ヨット、ボーリング等、多種多様なスポーツ活動を行なっていた事や、終戦直後の1945年9月から、それらのスポーツ活動を支える為の物資が日本に送られ始めていた事などが分かった。但し、これまでに史料調査を行なった陸軍史料と比べて、今回史料調査を行なった海軍史料からはスポーツ活動について得られた情報量が少なかった。
