本研究は、フランス、イタリア、スイスにまたがる地域のロマンス系言語であるフランコプロヴァンス語を対象に、非常に厳しい状況にある言語の再活性化について研究するものである。特にフランスのブレス地方に焦点を当て、フランコプロヴァンス語の言語使用を包括的に調査する。3年間の研究期間の1年目にあたる2021年度は、フランコプロヴァンス語に関する活動を行っている言語文化団体とその関係者を中心に調査を行う予定であったが、新型コロナウイルス感染症の影響のために、予定していた現地調査を年度内に実施することができず、2022年度に繰り越すこととなった。2021年度には、すでに収集していたインタビュー・データ及び各種資料をもとに、ブレス地方における言語使用状況の変遷と言語文化団体の活動の進展について調査し、分析を進めた（2022年度に学会での口頭発表及び論文の執筆・投稿を行う）。また、言語文化団体等の刊行物やウェブサイト等におけるフランコプロヴァンス語の使用、過去に実施したインタビュー等の録音データに含まれるフランコプロヴァンス語の発話の収集も進めた。さらに、地域社会におけるフランコプロヴァンス語の位置づけと使用状況について、観光局のSNSにおけるフランコプロヴァンス語に関する投稿についても検討した。これらを踏まえ、2022年8月から9月にかけてフランスで現地調査を実施した。ブレス地方の言語文化団体に所属する話者に対するインタビュー調査を中心に、ブレス地方を含むフランコプロヴァンス語圏西部地域の言語文化団体の連盟組織による活動の参与観察、図書館での資料調査等を行い、インタビュー協力者のフランコプロヴァンス語の使用状況、地域社会におけるフランコプロヴァンス語の使用状況の変遷と現状、コロナ禍を経た言語文化団体の活動の現状等について、概要を把握することができた。
