项目摘要

広義のエリザベス朝演劇の成功は、俳優ならぬ企業家の手による興行化がなされるようになったことと無関係ではないが、さらにいえば、中世以来のギルドが解体され、人は望めばどこからでも利潤を追求しうる社会-それは人々の旺盛な消費意欲とも結びついているのだが日-の誕生とも関っているといえるだろう。つまり、初期資本主義体制が演劇の育ての親なのである。エリザベス朝演劇全般に亘って興行の実態を複雑にしているのが実はこれ、即ち多くの人々が零細な利潤を求めようとする欲得心だが、スチュアート朝に入って少年劇団がたまたま企業化され、それが演劇興行の一つの理想形を示して以来、その傾向にはさらに拍車がかかったといえるだろう。十七世紀になると、ある成人劇団を搾取し尽すやそれを見拾てたり、成人劇団からの儲けが薄いとみるや少年劇団相手に転身する企業家が目立つようになるのは、その影響以外の何ものでもないだろう。くかし、スチユアート朝演劇全体を眺めを場合、演劇を純粋に投資の対象とした事人企業家たちは、結局成功したとはいいがたい。新興企業とはいえ一応確立されてしまえば、経営者の才覚というものが必要になってきて、専門家の眼なしでは立ちいかなくなるということだろう。ヘンズロウ型ではなく、ビーストン型の興行師が主流を占めていく所以である。スチユアート朝の演劇興行を特徴づけるもう一つの点は、国王一座のようにギルドの形に戻るのではなく新しい企業形態をとった劇団がむしろ独裁者的傾向を示し、沈滞していくという奇妙な事実である。これは、興行が一見活発にみえて一つのヒエラルキーの中に固定化され、企業として生き延びていくための眞に創造的エネルギーを奪われた結果だといえるだろう。スチユアート朝演劇は、企業として安定すると死体となるというのは、初期資本主義社会の典型的矛循そのものなのである。
