「古代風に」を標榜したヨーロッパ・ルネサンスの目指すところは、中世風の「野蛮」の超克にあった。世俗性、合理性の喧伝がいつしか優美さの強調に席を譲ってしまう理由はそこにある。民衆演劇が栄えたエリザベス朝とは実は中世の延長で、ルネサンスの真の土着化はステュアート朝から始まるのであり、王政復古とはその究極の姿に他ならないという議論がなりたつ根拠もまた、ここにある。劇場閉鎖期、共和政時代の演劇のもつ意味は、このルネサンスの継承と発展にそれがいかなる貢献をなし、様式面での完成と裏腹に内容面では宮廷人好みに空疎化した劇の完成に直接間接にどのように寄与したかにあるといえるのだろう。演劇の視覚化は、この時期を俟たず、宮廷余興の活発化とともにみられた現象であるが、音楽の重視も実は17世紀初めの少年劇団の復活から始まっていた。従来の形での上演を禁止された演劇関係者は「朗唱風」を装うことで上演の正当化の口実を見出そうとしたのである。オペラ様式や書割り、額縁舞台の登場はもちろん、女優の誕生もこの際の副産物だったのである。「変装」は明らかに変質に通じたのであった。劇場閉鎖は周知の如く清教徒の要請によるものであった。しかし、これはそれまでの劇が必ずしも反清教徒的色彩一色に染まっていたことを意味するものではない。むしろ、多分に逆だといってよい。ところが、閉鎖期においては演劇の需要は娯楽一辺倒であった。しかも、いつ当局による手入れが行われるかわからない。勢い、劇は短く、軽便に上演ができ、しかも盛沢山であることが要求される。さわりを寄せ集めた「笑激(ドロール)」が流行した所以である。劇はこうしてこれ以後真に本質的な問題を扱うのをやめ、多少とも社交界のアクセサリー的存在に堕していくが、これにはこの時期亡命者が伝えた大陸演劇の影響も無視しえない。国際化は堕落の同義語であった。
