Power-combining characteristics of window-output cylindrical cavity multiple-device oscillators/amplifiers are investigated to give the following results. (1) A mode analysis of the oscillators based on circuit models shows that both <TM_(ono)> - and <TM_(m10)> - modes can be power-combining modes, and gives the condition for stable power-combining operation in the desired mode. (2) The electromagnetic field in the combiner cavities and the coupling of devices to the cavity field is calculated using finite element method. (3) By the experiments using Gunn diodes, it is shown that almost perfect power combining in <TM_(210)> mode can be achieved as in <TM_(020)> mode and the power combining efficiency decreases gradually with increasing n and m. Power combining in the <TM_(810)> mode gives higher efficiency then in the <TM_(040)> mode. These experimental results agree qualitatively with the evaluation based on the device-field coupling. (4) The experiments of both transmission- and reflection-type power amplifiers with the <TM_(020)> -mode multiple-device cavity show that the power-combining efficiency and the frequencyresponse are better in the latter than in the former. (5) The parallel running of two <TM_(020)> -mode oscillators shows the capability of almost perfect power combining. In the case when one or two devices fall into breakdown in one of the oscillators, the output power of the oscillator can be recovered partially in the parallel running.
