13世紀、14世紀を中心とする、わが国中世もしくは中国南宋・元時代の禅僧の頂相を主として調査した。中でも京都東福寺の開山である円爾弁円(1202-1280)の頂相については、東福寺、京都天授庵などの優品を総て調査し、併せて写真等の記録をとった。円爾弁円はわが国の禅宗受容史において、その初期におけるもっとも重要な禅僧の一人であると思われるからである。これに関して、奈良国立博物館で特別陳列「禅僧と墨跡」を開催(61、9、9-10、10)した。この展観は、円爾弁円と、その師である無準師範(-1249)、その弟子である山叟慧雲(1232-1301)、癡兀大慧(1229-1312)の肖像、墨跡と関連資料を陳列したものだが、そのさいに南宋の頂相の傑作とされ、わが鎌倉時代の頂相成立に大きい影響を与えたと考えられる国宝無準師範像(東福寺)についてX線撮影をふくむ詳細な調査が実施でき、表現技法(水墨画的線描、彩色における陰影法、裏彩色の技法、顔料の種類の特定など)を追求できたことは収穫であった。この外にも同様の調査を出品作品について実施した。その後、東福寺とその塔頭に所蔵される絵画と書跡の調査を、奈良国立博物館の書跡担当の技官西山厚氏の協力を得て前後数回にわたり実施した。東福寺の収蔵庫に所在する作品のほとんどを調査、写真撮影したが、絵画では東福寺の画僧明兆(1352-1431)の作例の多くについて資料収集できたことが大きい。その結果は台帳として整理し利用する。京都と並んで、博多(福岡)と鎌倉は禅宗美術を考える上で欠くことが出来ないが、福岡では来朝僧の、鎌倉では建長寺、円覚寺の主要な作例を調査し、京都の作例と比較検討する材料とした。東京国立博物館では、玄証本先徳図像、京都神護寺の藤原光能像、京都妙法院の後白河法王像などをはじめとするわが国に伝統的ないわゆるやまと絵の肖像画の調査をし、禅宗肖像画との比較材料とした。
