本年度中に行った調査研究によって次のことが明らかになった。(1)本報告者が調査を始めた昭和55年当時には、伝統的な医療・治療行動が、急激な近代医学との接触増加によってかなり混乱し、人々は新たな情報の流入によって「自分達は昔と比べて身体が弱くなった」「このムラでは以前よりも病気が多くなった」などの不安を強く持っていた。また、自分達の病状の把握がかつてのように自信をもって行うことができなくなり、いわゆる「ジタバタする」という治療行動が盛んに見られた。しかし、今回の調査では、人々は近代医学の限界をよく理解し、病状の把握、それに基づいた治療行動を、時間や経済的消費とのかね合いで選択するという傾向が著しい。(2)近代医学への評価は高いが、ターミナル・ケアについては、伝統的な方法に回帰している。病人もその家族も、15年前までそうであったように、「助からない」病人を在宅で、しかも医療処置をできるだけ少くするようにして死なせるという形をとることが多い。(3)死生観については、一時期のような混乱と不安の状態から適応の状態へとその治療行動が変化するにつれて、伝統的死生観がより明らかな形で人々に把握されるようになった。(4)プライマリー・ケアとターミナル・ケアにおいて、伝統的治療行動の基本となっている疾病観念が明白である。今後、この地区およびこの地方全域では一層の高齢化が進むと考えられている。予防医療、老人医療にいち早く自治体をあげて取り組んできた結果が明らかになると考えられる。2、3年おきの追跡調査を続ける予定である。
