主としてインド国内に話される(1)インド・アーリア語族(2)ドラヴィダ語族(3)オーストロ・アジア語族(4)チベット・ビルマ語族の諸言語(現代口語)を, インフォーマントの面接を通じて調査研究し, これら諸言語と日本語との辞書編纂のための基礎資料を作り, かつそれらすべての資料を電算機に入力してデータベースとする.この目的実現のため, 研究協力機関及び専門家たちとの連絡打ち合わせ, インフォーマントの選定及び予備調査, 電算機施設の視察及び専門家たちとの協議, 関連資料の収集等を行う.63年度から始まる本調査の目的は3.調査研究の目的のとおりであるが, 本年度行った予備調査は次の四つを目的として実施された.【目的】(1)現地側協力研究所及び共同研究予定者との本調査実施に関する詳細な打ち合わせ.(2)本調査予定言語に関する現地側の過去及び現在の研究状況の把握.(3)アンフォーマント獲得の可能性と実験的語彙調査.(4)電算機施設の視察と現地でのデータ入力・処理の可能性の検討.【結果】(1)現地側協力研究所であるインド諸語中央研究所の所長以下共同研究予定者(7名)はもちろん全職員協力体制をととのえ, 研究対象言語名及び日本側共同研究者との組み合わせを正式に決めた. ただし, 対象言語毎に一名ずつの研究補助が心要であるとの認識にたち, 本調査開始までに現地側担当者が補助者を選定しておくことが決められた.(2)少数部族の言語調査はかなり進んでいるものの, 公用語に関する口語資料の本格的な調査研究はまだ行われていないことが判明した.(3)インフォーマントの獲得はそれほど難しくはなく, 特に大学生ないし教員をインフォーマントとして面接調査することが望ましいとの結論に達した. そしてAA研の言語調査表に基づきアッサム語, ベンガル語, オリア語, マラーティー語, グジャラート語, スィンド語, テルグ語, タミル語, マニブール語, カリア語, ムンタリー語, サジリ語, サンタル語, ドムボ語の14言語それぞれの基本語彙200〜500語を収集した.(4)インド統計研究所及びインド諸語中央研究所の電算機施設を視察したが, 処理能力が小さく, しかも漢字プリンターが無いため, インド文字そのものの処理ができぬので, 現地でまずローマ字で入力し, それを日本に持ち帰ったAA研の電算機で変換処理をしなければならぬだろうとの見通しをもつに至った.
