本研究では, 民俗学における近年の都市民俗研究への関心の高まりという動向をうけて, 都市における民俗調査・研究を着実に発展せしめることを目標にまず都市民俗調査をなすに当っての調査項目を検討し設定すべく研究・調査をすすめてきた. 戦後の社会変化と対応し,都市生活が主要な位置を占めるようになった今日, 民俗学の領域においても, 都市をその主要なる対象領域として設定し, そこでの民俗変容や伝承母体, 民俗の新たなる生成などの諸問題や都市独自の民俗のあり方や存在形態などを考察する方向が学界全体における主要な課題となりつつある. これまでも, 民俗学方法論とからめた都市民俗学への諸提言はなかりなされてきているが, しかし都市での実地調査はいまだ暗中模索の状態をでておらず, 民俗学においてこの分野を着実に発展させ, 方向づけるために統一的な都市民俗の調査項目を策定することは, 急務な課題であると考えた. そこで, 本研究では, これまでの都市民俗学に関する諸研究の検討及び討議をすすめるとともに, 実際に将来調査予定の東京, 金沢, 山口, 筑波学園都市の況都市を実地に巡見して回って, 本格的な都市民俗の調査項目を作成するための基礎研究を行なうことができた. この過程で, 都市における主要な口承文芸の一つと考えられる世間話関係の文献目録を整理し作成した.
