1.研究計画に従って, 東京・京都の研究機関や図書館に赴き, 本研究のための資料, とくに判讀資料の調査と収集を行ない, また関連する著作や論文の収集も行なった. 現在それらの整理と解読を継続しつつあり, 一部については既に検討を終えている.2.研究成果として公表したのは, さし当り後に示した窃盗罪に関する研究である. 従来, 身分制史研究の分野で窃盗罪が注目されることはなかったのであるが, 本論文ではこの犯罪が中国身分制史研究の上で有力かつ不可欠の素材を提供するものであることを論じた. また, 窃盗罪の性格をもとに, 中国身分制のもつ一般的性格のひとつに, 宗族倫理と家父長制秩序との根強い存在があったことも併せ論じた. 中国身分制史にあっては, 西欧やわが国の前近代史とは異なり, 階級関係が身分制度として政治的に編成されることは極めて少なかったのであった. 階級関係, 宋代以降で言えば地主=佃戸関係や主人=奴僕関係は, それ自体として身分的秩序や階層秩序に編成されたことはなく, かろうじて親族内の身分秩序たる尊長=卑幼の関係にアナロジーとして据えられていたに止まっているのである. それは階級関係が多分に可逆的・流動的であったこと, 上部構造の源泉としての儒教イデオロギーが圧倒的な影響力を有していたことに由来するものであろう.3.私は既に良民と賤民, 官僚と庶民の身分関係について些かの研究を行なってきたが, 今回の階級関係と身分制度との関連についての研究をも加えて, より全体的で体系的な身分制史研究を推進する必要を痛感している. それは中国前近代社会の性格一般を規定する上で, 有効かつ不可欠な一素材となるだろうからである.
