本年度は、当該研究課題に関する文献史料、特に一次史料の収集に努めるとともに、老字号研究の方法論と老字号の歴史研究の深化を企図して国際シンポジウムを開催し、多大なる成果を上げた。国内における史料の調査・収集としては、研究代表者津田芳郎が平成21年2月に東京大学東洋文化研究所において、また分担者三木聰が同20年11月に同研究所において、商家の家産分割、或いは公私合営化時期の老字号に関する史料の収集を行った。海外調査としては、平成20年9月下旬および平成21年3月の二度に亘って、主に北京・上海の档案館・図書館で実施した。両者とも、津田・三木の他に、分担者の吉開将人・松下憲一および研究協力者として慶應義塾大学教授山本英史が参加した。前者では、ほぼ北京市档案館において、北京の個別老字号関係の一次史料の収集に努めた。特に目立ったものは、解放後における老字号の経営および50年代半ばの公私合営化に関連する各種の調査資料であり、政治的変革期における老字号の浮沈等、興味深いデータを収集することができた。一方、後者では引き続き北京市楷案館でのデータ収集とともに、中国国家図書館・首都図書館・中国社会科学院法学研究所図書室等で当該周辺資料の調査を行った。ただ各機関での調査・収集がすべて順調に進んでいるわけではなく、外国人として地方性档案に接することの困難さ、或いは個別組織の運営の壁を意識せざるを得ない。平成20年12月19-20日には北海道大学文学研究科を会場として「16-20世紀中国の商業・商法・商店経営」と題する国際シンポジウム(研討会)を開催した。海外から中国南京大学教授范金民、台湾中央研究院近代史研究所副研究員巫仁恕、同歴史研究所副研究員邱澎生および同副研究員連玲玲の四氏を招き、国内の研究者との間で活発な議論を展開した。
