本研究は1980年代に入ってからの世界資本市場の構造的変化と日本の資本輸出との対応関係, およびそれが日本の国内金融システムに及ぼしつつある影響と理論的, 実証的に分析することを目的とした.まず, 堀内(論文1)は1970年代から80年代にかけて生じた世界の資本フローの変化と, 資本移動の具体的な形態に関する変化を分析し, 発展途上国への資金流入が厳しく制約されている現在の資金配分状態を, 一種の「市場の失敗」として考察した. さらに, この市場の失敗を克服するために, 日本がどの様な役割を担い得るかを, 国際金融機関の役割を強調しつつ分析した.また, 植田(論文3)は, 過去30年間にわたる日本の国際収支(経常収支)がどの様な要因によって変化したかを, 各時代毎に経済構造の変化と対応させて分析した. 日本の経常収支が, 基本的に国内の貯蓄・投資のアンバランスに規定されてきたことが明らかにされている. ことに, 日本の高い貯蓄率が近年の経常収支黒字基調を決定づけており, さらに日本における金融自由化の動きが, 次第に資本移動の形態を左右するようになってきたことが明らかにされた.さらに, 堀内(論文2)は日本の国内金融システムを特徴づけてきたメインバンク制度の機能を分析した. この制度は金融市場における情報の不完全性を克服する方法として貸手・借手の主体的な契約関係によって生み出されたこと, また日本における金融の国際化とともに貸付を基盤とするメインバンク関係は次第にその影響力を失いつつあるが, しかし情報交換のための組織としての関係は依然として重要であり, 今後もその影響力を維持し続けるであろうと結論されている.
