Previous studies have shown that pulsed electromagnetic field (PEMF) stimulation potentiates parathyroid hormone(PTH) stimulations of cAMP, ornithine decarboxylase and glucosaminoglycan syntheses in primary cultures of rabbit costal chondrocytes.This indicates that PEMF stimulation angments the sensitivity of cultured cartilage cells to PTH and promotes their differentiation. However, PEMF had little effect on chondrocyte proliferation. The effect of PEMF stimulation was observed only in PTH. It did not give any effects in the presence of cartilage derived factor, fibroblast growth factor, substance-P, and insulin-like growth factor. In the present study, the effect of pulsed electric field(PEF) stimulation on cell proliferation was study using Normal rat kidney cells. PEF stimulation caused 30% increase in the incorporation of <@D13@>D3H-thymidine into DNA in the presence of 0.3% FCS. Further increase in the concentration of FCS accelerated the proliferation of cells and diminished the effect of the PET stimulation. Furthermore the PEF and PEMF stimulations affected alkaline phosphatase activity during the process of calcification in pellet cultures of chondrocytes.
