Archaeological Study on the Chinese Ceramic Trade throughout the Arabian Sea.

The main purpose of this research was to study the sea route trade between East and West in medieaval times. We made excavations at the site of Julfar in the United Arab Emirates and the site of A'Ali in Bahrain in 1988 and 1989 seasons. The site of Julfar is situated at the lower end of the Arabian Gulf. We excavated the port site. Layer 1 is belonged to the 16th century and layer 6 is 14th century. We found the buildings, post holes, pits and ovens in each layers. Many Chinese blue-and-white and Thai land celadon were found from the upper layers. But these finds were not excavated from the lower layers. The kinds of trade goods were changed by layers. The site of A'Ali is the village of the 9-10th centuries. Houses, date incubators and some ovens were excavated. Most of the finds were ceramic fragments, sherds of earthenware being the largest in number, and glazed ceramics next. The both sites are very large and well preserved by their government. All found are kept in the national museum in both countries.
