This research project is fundamentally concerned with urbanization and transformation of spatial structure in the Middle Eastern cities since the end of 19 th century. The main study areas are Turkey and Syria. Firstly, we chose Aleppo to analyze the impacts of urbanization on the economic and social structure. For this purpose, we investigated some specific areas both in a traditional commercial area and a newly developped one. Secondly, in several Turkish cities such as Istanbul, Ankara, Izmir and other Important regional centers, we conducted a comparative study which focused on urban planning and its realization from the viewpoints of the spatial implication of urban policies both under the Ottman Empire and the Turkish Republic.

本研究主要关注19世纪末以来中东城市的城市化和空间结构的变化。主要研究地区是土耳其和叙利亚。首先，我们选择了阿勒颇城市化对经济和社会结构的影响进行分析。为此，我们对一个传统商业区和一个新开发的商业区的一些特定区域进行了调查。其次，对土耳其的几个城市，如伊斯坦布尔、安卡拉、伊兹密尔等重要的区域中心城市，从奥斯曼帝国和土耳其共和国时期城市政策的空间含义的角度，对城市规划及其实现进行了比较研究。
