The agreement of cooperation between the Institute for Chemical Research, Kyoto University and Fachbereich Physik, University Duisburg has been approved since 1984 and the joint research between professor T. Shinjo, Kyoto, and Professor W. Kene, Duisburg on the subject, Magnetism of Fe Surface and Interface, has been supported by this Grant-in-Aid from 1988 to 1990.The technique for the preparation of metallic multilayers initially established in Kyoto has been introduced to Duisburg and the magnetic properties of Fe/Zr and Fe/Tb multilayers have been investigated in both places. The surface selective conversion electron Mossbauer spectroscopy and the Mossbauer cryostat with split coil superconductor in Duisburg, and ultralow temperature Mossbauer facility at Kyoto have been utilized complementarily.As a result, the mechanism of anisotropy at the interface between Fe and rare earth layers has been made clear.The join papers have preliminarily been published at the European Materials Research Society Meeting at Strasbourg, in 1990. In March 1991, a workshop was organized by the cosponsorship of this Grant-in-Aid and DFG in Germany. Besides the members of the two groups, about 30 distinguished guests were invited there and the magnetism of surfaces and multilayers has been extensively discussed.The workshop was reputed as a very fruitful one to get an overview and perspective for the study of ultrathin film magnetism.
