The measurement of the infrared sky brightness was attained under the collaboration between Nagoya University and University of California, Berkeley. During this period of this project two rocket flights were carried out, and the development of the satellite born instrument was made. Details of these works are described as follows.1. S-520-10 rocket experimentIn order to measure the submillimeter spectrum of the 3K cosmic background radiation and the diffuse galactic emission, very sensitive submillimeter photometer with the He3 refrigerator and bolometers was developed and fabricated. The instrument was installed on the sounding rocket S-520-10 and launched on August, 1989. Although spurious noise was picked up, photometer worked well and the performance of He3 refrigerator was confirmed. The data after analysis indicate that 3K cosmic background radiation has a spectrum of the blackbody which is consistent with the recent result of COBE satellite by NASA.2. S-520-11 rocket experiment … More Main objective of this experiment was to measure near-infrared sky brightness and the telescope of 10cm mirror was installed. As one important part of the satellite born infrared telescope (IRTS) a new baffle system was developed and the test of this baffle of 2/3 scale was attained in this rocket experiment. At the end of the flight sequence, telescope was inclined towards earth limb and the earth shine was measured. The result was consistent with the performance measured in the laboratory and it was confirmed that this baffle system is very useful for the IRTS mission.3. Development of the satellite-born instrumentThe focal plane instruments of IRTS are being developed under collaboration between ISAS and NASA. Nagoya University of and University California have had a responsibility on the far infrared photometer (FIRP). The He3 refrigerator with sensitive bolometers were developed in two institutes. IRTS will be launched on January of 1994, and it is expected that FIRP will provide valuable data on the cosmology and galactic structure. Less
