Geographical study on the relationships between traffic system and regional system in Japan

The aim of this study is to clarify the mutual relationships between traffic system and regional system. In other words, it examines how recent radical changes of traffic system, such as the constructions of new express-railroads 'shinkansen' and highways, the improvements of existing railroads and roads, and the diffusion of car-ownership, have influenced the social, economic, and cultural aspects of regional structure. Our study consists of both macro- and micro-scall analysis, theoretical and observational considerations, and economic and socio-cultural examinations. The following results were obtained.1. National-scall section: (1) Lowry model versions are most suitable for theoretical models concerning the relationships between traffic and land use, (2) regional migrations of active population can be interpreted as diffusion process from metropolitan areas caused by the improvement of traffic net- works, (3) the same tendency were observed in the motorization process of pre-war period.2. Eastern Japan section: (1) concerning the relationships between traffic-system and socio-economic aspects of regional activities, parallel transformations are observed in some outer-metropolitan areas such as Mitsukaido-city, lwai-city, and Tsuchiura-city, (2) these changes can be considered as diffusion processes of the innovations of metropolitan Tokyo, (3) similar situations are observed in the Shimokita district, Aomori prefecture, but with peculiar characteristics that are proper in the region.3. West Japan section: (1) the changes of traffic system are deeply linked with the problems of aged people in depopulated areas of periphery, (2) the formations of several touristic zones around metropolitan cities are observed as a result of the improvement of traffic networks.
