The present research is an investigation of life, from birth to death, carried out from the standpoints of philosophy and ethics which have been created and developed in the different historical traditions. Life presents different appearances in accordance with various stages such as birth, growth, disease and death. We made an examination of the logic and structure of life itself by analysing the meaning of life in each stage.Each investigator has collected the necessary data of different thoughts of life and death as found in the East and in the West. Through the analysis of these data from several standpoints we discussed the conceptions of life and death as recognized by modern people in the different regions and ages.In order to discuss the present topic, we had discussion-meetings every two months. Besides, we once invited to our meeting Prof. M. Takemura of Tsukuba University as a specialist of this field.The present topic involves various problems relevant to the different climates, regions, historical traditions and customs in Japan. Therefore, our research was not an easy task and, frankly speaking, it can not be brought to our satisfaction.We here present a humble result of our research carried out in these three years.

本研究是从不同历史传统中产生和发展起来的哲学和伦理学的观点出发，对生命从生到死的考察。生命在出生、成长、疾病、死亡等不同阶段呈现出不同的面貌。我们通过分析每个阶段的生命意义来考察生命本身的逻辑和结构，每个研究者都收集了东西方不同生死思想的必要资料。通过对这些资料的分析，我们从不同的角度讨论了不同地区、不同时代的现代人对生死的认识。为了讨论这个问题，我们每两个月举行一次讨论会。此外，我们曾经邀请M教授参加我们的会议。日本筑波大学的武村先生是这方面的专家，本课题涉及与日本不同的气候、地域、历史传统和习俗有关的各种问题。因此，我们的研究工作并不容易，坦率地说，我们不能令人满意。在这里，我们提出了一个卑微的结果，我们在这三年进行的研究。
