本研究は、戦後日本の4年制大学・短期大学における学部・学科の新設(増設)、改組、廃止の状況を時系列に展望し、学部・学科の変革を促進する背景と要因は何か、について比較社会学的に分析することを目的として進められた。その目的を達成するために、文部省監修『全国大学一覧』と『全国短期大学・高等専門学校一覧』を用いて、1989年、1980年、1971年、1963年、1954年の5期について、大学・短大における学部・学科の新設(増設)、改組、廃止の状況を時系列にデ-タ・ベ-ス化した。さらに、情報を補うために、各大学・短大の学校案内等の文書資料を収集するとともに、学校関係者への面接調査を行った。その結果、現時点で、以下3点の知見を得ることができた。1.時を経るにしたがって、大学、短大ともに、学科の種類が増加している。例えば、大学における学科の種類数は、1954年の360種類、1963年の418種類、1971年の539種類、1980年の667種類、1989年においては796種類となっている。また、短大においては、1954年の174種類、1963年の214種類、1971年の274種類、1980年の296種類、1989年においては333種類となっている。2.学科の新設(増設)は、大学や短大を取り巻く社会・経済的変動に反応した結果であるものと考えられる。例えば、そのことは、近年、社会の情報化や国際化の進展にともなって、大学や短大において、情報学科や国際学科等の学科が急増しているという事実に示されている。3.私立の大学や短大は、国立や公立に比べて、学科の新設(増設)、改組、廃止が活発である。これは、社会の変化に対する設置者間の感応性の相違を反映しているものと思われる。詳細な分析を継続中で、さらなる知見が得られるものと期待される。
