科研費によって夏と秋に各1回、冬に2回と計4回の調査旅行が可能となり、とりわけ中心的な調査地岡山は延日数にして44日間の滞在に及び集中的な資料の閲覧収集を果たしえたため、研究成果を急ぎ論文として公表しえる運びとなった。明治・大正期のいわゆる糞尿問題を岡山と鳥取の事例に即して検討しようとするものだが、岡山の場合は依拠すべき最大の資料たることが判明した山陽新報を八方手を尽くして閲覧許可を求め(一部非公開なため)、明治期の分は必要箇所をほぼ網羅的に読むことができたことによって、明治39年に起こった人糞尿汲取をめぐる都市・近郊農村間の深刻な抗争の全容をほぼ解明しえた(詳細は今春刊行の紀要掲載論文で展開してある)。他方、鳥取の場合は地元有力紙の残存状態が極めて悪く、欠号部分が多すぎて新聞記事に依拠して実証研究を行うのは不可能と判明した。そして新聞にかわるべき有力な資料も見い出せなかったが、それでも岡山と比べて遅れてしかも小規模な紛争になっていたらしいことがいくつかの地元資料から推測しえた(ただし、これでは到底まだまだ論文になりえない)。ともかく岡山に発生した明治期の糞尿問題はその全体像に迫りえたのであるが、大正期に起こった紛争についてはその発生と展開が何年何月のことか明確になっていないため、新聞をめくり関連記事を検索するのが非常に手間取り、しかも山陽新報が大正10年から夕刊紙をも発行していたことが判明しその閲覧にはほぼ2倍の時間を要することで、この資料収集はいっそう難渋することとなった。そのため限られた日数の調査旅行による作業の中途で時間切れとなり、まだ分析可能となるだけの資料収集ができていないままの状態で、調査を中断するの止むなきに至った。これができれば研究をほぼ完成しえると考えているだけに、ぜひとも次の機会を期したく思うものである。
