科研費によって1991年の夏・秋・冬に各1回づつ,ほぼ研究実施計画どおり計3回の調査・資料収集旅行をおこなった。とはいえ調査の主力を岡山にそそいだものの限られた日時のため地元紙を読み残してしまった。そこで止むなく職場の教員旅費をあてて1992年2〜3月に補充調査旅行をせざるをえなかった。こうして延日数にして33日間の滞在に及んだ岡山では主に岡山県庁で,その閲覧・利用には種々困難を伴ったものの(公開を原則としていない機関なので)ともかく山陽新報の明治44年から大正14年6月まで分に目を通し必要な記事を検索したうえで複写して資料収集することにこぎつけた。また岡山大学付属図書館資源生物科学研究所分館には肥料経済関係資料がかなり所蔵されていたので,新聞閲覧の合間にこれの資料収集にも務めた。岡山市立中央図書館では少しばかりでしかも結果的に失敗作もでたが新聞の写真撮影もおこなった。このように収集した資料はかなりの分量にのぼりねで今はおおむね資料整理の段階にとどまり本格的な通読まだ先にもちこすことにならざるをえないのが目下の実状である。がともかく人糞尿をめぐる都市住民と近郊農村民の利害状況及び屎尿市営化過程の実体を地方有力都市の事実に即して把握しうる根本資料になるのではないかと判断しつつある。精読したうえでなるべく早く論文として取りまとめ公表する予定である。次にもう一方の主たる調査地である神戸には延日数にして9日間滞在したが,その地元紙はマイクロフィルムで見るほかないこともあり,作業は難航した。ともかく神戸新聞を神戸市立中央図書館で(神戸又新日報はあまり価値がないと判明),大阪朝日新聞神戸付録(目録に朝日新聞兵庫版とあるのは不正確と判明)を西宮市立中央図書館(兵庫県立図書館よりこちらが便利)で読んだものの,資料収集は少量にとどまった。神戸についてはあまり進捗しなかったので今後の機会を期したく思う。
